GOAN HOMELESS MAN, MR MARIO VAZ , FROM CUNCOLIM

12.1.2021 7pm IST
This Goan homeless man, Mr Mario Vaz , from Cuncolim, requires Rs 40000 to be able to have vision in his eye.
3 years back we accepted this man directly from the Government hospital.
He was:
▪︎An alcoholic
▪︎Highly diabetic
▪︎Living on a street ,
▪︎Was next to blind in both eyes ,
▪︎Had his 1 leg amputated,
▪︎Stressed and in a depression.
▪︎Very tall and heavy in the bones .
Imagine any home ready to accept such a man without any charges.
Took us 1 year to stabilise him and bring him out of all his issues.
2 years back we operated his 1 eye by getting his retina detachment fixed @ Rs 40000.
That brought sight to his 1 eye.
The Covid lockdown prevented us from fixing his 2nd eye.
This month we have got an appointment to do a operation on his 2nd eye by fixing his retina detachment.
The issue is this operation costs approx
rs 40000 and is done exclusively at
Vision Hospital , Mapusa .
In the last 18 month we must have taken Mario attest 12 times to the hospital trying to get his 2nd eye operated but most of the time his Diabetes has been out of control.
Once his diabetes was 525.
But Mario has turned out to be very responsible and co operative.
In one of our homes he is the MANAGER .
Watch our 5 min video please .
Mario runs the home with his team.
We have kept him so busy that inspite of having an Amputated leg and no vision in
1 eye , yet he is doing a fantastic job that his diabetics is within control at times.
Mario has a big team to assist him .
He has
▪︎A cook
▪︎A kitchen assistant
▪︎2 care givers
▪︎1 assistant for the medication
In that house there are 35 men of which 25 are on prescribed medication and Mario keeps track of everything and anything.
Mario has a phone which he keeps updating our Manager , Sapnesh with all that happens at the home .
Once we operate his 2nd eye , then we will fix his amputated leg.
If not for Mr Rocky , Now Asst Sub Inspector, Goa Police , attached to , police outpost at GMC , who requested us to take him in, when he was operated and amputated for his leg, Mario would not be still around to see this day.
Can u imagine that day when Mario was going to be discharged from the hospital, what must have been his mental frame, knowing he lost a leg due to amputation.
He must have been all confused and stressed whether he would be living back on a street or on a bus stop.
His health was really bad and he required a home to recover.
We were that home.
What we sowed in Mario life 3 years back has brought fruit to our shelter home .
This is how plenty of Goa Police personnel work at times .
HUMANE TOUCH .
Mr Rocky could have walked away and said to himself, ” why break my head on Mario “.
But Rocky choose to live and walk with HUMANITY .
We got a very good and responsible MANAGER in our 1 home.
Can u imagine what that means to MARIO & us @ Street Providence.
Mario has something to look forward too inspite of his disabilities .
That's what we do in our rehabilitation homes.
We take in those, whom the world rejects or avoids and chisel them till they began to shine for others in the home .
Mario has been continously listening to the WORD OF GOD, which plays on a CD.
We must have missed many more like Mario on the streets , for many reasons.
You took can play your part by reaching out to homeless people on the streets and getting them into various old aged and shelter homes.
