Once a Rag picker now a CROCHET designer.

As I begin 40 days of LENT, I am not going to fast but going to attempt to take into our shelter homes, atleast 40 homeless & poor goans suffering from mental disabilities.

Simultaneously we also will bring out the best we can in the lives of these 60 ladies who we currently are rehabilitating in our homes.

And today we highlight this goan lady :

Even the biggest home in Goa just could not keep her so we took her in.

And to top it all ” WHOLESALE  CARELESS DEPARTMENT ( WCD ) ” , is paying us through grants Rs 2500 per month per lady to look after and care for poor Goan uneducated ladies suffering from both mental & physical disabilities. 

Recently a SOS call from a Pilar priest ( SFX )  with fervent appeal made us accept this lady.

Stubborn and destructive because she knows she is diabetic and has parts of both her feet cut off due to high diabetes.

The day of admission was difficult as she refused to get off our ambulance for over two hours with all the abuses and shouting which created a huge embarrassing situation in the shelter home neighborhood.

I was called to intervene as the team was hitting a dead end.

She kept speaking about the devil , the evil , the dark life which I assume had overtaken her mind.

She being a catholic I only told her ” Jesus needs you ” and pretend that I was not aware of the negative issues she was talking.

Slowly she subsided with some lollipops and we got her out of the Ambulance, pounced on her and lifted her into the shelter home where I told her ” you can shout whole night, till you get tired”.

Belive me,  the feeling of the shelter home, the fellow inmates, the care givers and the elderly nun got her to quiet down all within 1 hour flat.

Everyday OUR JEEP  takes her to the District Hospital Mapusa for dressings as she was living in this hospital for many months and they know her case .

Each trip to the hospital is nothing less than 

Rs 500 plus a driver and a care giver accompanies her, and that too is a cost.

WHOLESALE CARELESS DEPARTMENT ( WCD ) should understand that Rs 2500 grant per month is just not enough.

The officials at WHOLESALE CARELESS DEPARTMENT should think that if this lady was their mother, sister, niece, aunty, relative or if they one day were like her in our shelter Home as an inmate, how would they feel.

She is good at CROCHET and whole day sits quietly and does all this beautiful stuff but has a terrible loose tongue.

Never did she know that she has a talent In her which Is CROCHET and never was she encouraged to make her living by doing CROCHET.

All we did was stand by her and tell her sternly 

” either go ahead in life or suffer, choice is yours”.

This poor lady with both her feet amputated and suffering from severe mental disabilities is encouraged to forget her past and is reassured that WE CARE FOR HER & her past is not our concern.

Imagine this lady as a rag picker for years and we as goans surely called her GHANTI but today using her talent which no one would ever imagine she had.

We have to buy wool , needles, knitting tools daily to keep so many ladies totally occupied else they will keep thinking in space and not come out of their mental disabilities. 

Everything costs money nothing is cheap and Free , especially health care and medication.

Inspite of WHOLESALE CARELESS DEPARTMENT inhumane approach to our issues,  yet I do the best I can to take in anyone who is in need of a helping hand into our homes.

I don't see their medical condition at the time of their admission but I always VISUALIZE how I want them to be in THE FUTURE in a few days after their admission.

We have poor goans as well as homeless with Disabilities from all religions ie Cathlolics , Hindus and Muslims.

My disappointment with WHOLESALE CARELESS DEPARTMENT is never taken out on such poor suffering ladies who come with all types of sickness and disabilities.

My fight with WHOLESALE CARELESS DEPARTMENT is justified as I am doing The State a service when the department has failed to address such issues.

Budgets go back unutilized and the poor goan ladies suffer as WHOLESALE CARELESS DEPARTMENT officials are busy doing all their personal work during office time.

We will attempt to do the best we can inspite of the uncooperative nature from this all women department which is actually meant to work for the welfare of such women.

During LENT you can work and support such poor homeless abandoned goan women suffering from mental disabilities by adopting one such Goan lady for the year.
